Echeveria 'Devotion'

Plush Plant / Red Devotion

Complete Care Guide

🌿 About This Plant

Echeveria 'Devotion' (often cataloged as a hybrid of Echeveria pulvinata) is a striking, shrubby succulent highly prized for its velvety, soft foliage. The leaves emerge rich green and blush into a deep, intense burgundy-red when exposed to bright light. The fine, fuzzy hairs covering the leaves give it a distinct plush texture. This pet-friendly succulent is non-toxic to humans and animals.

☀️ Light & Temperature

Requires bright, direct sunlight (at least 5 to 6 hours daily) to maintain its compact rosette shape and develop its signature deep red/burgundy color. Place in a south- or west-facing window indoors.

  • Temperature Range: Thrives in warm conditions between 65°F–80°F (18°C–27°C).
  • Frost Warning: Cannot tolerate frost. Bring indoors before temperatures drop below 40°F–45°F (4°C–7°C).
  • Etiolation Alert: In low light, the plant will stretch out ("etiolate") and lose its vibrant color.
  • 💧 Watering & Soil

Needs extremely gritty, free-draining soil to prevent stem and root rot. Use a commercial cactus/succulent mix amended with coarse sand, perlite, or grit. A pot with drainage holes is essential.

  • Soak and Dry Method: Water thoroughly until it runs out the drainage hole, then allow soil to dry out completely before watering again.
  • Winter Watering: Reduce significantly. Water sparingly—just enough to keep leaves from shriveling.
  • Crucial Tip: Water directly at the soil base. Avoid getting water on the fuzzy leaves or in the rosette to prevent rot.
  • 🌱 Feeding & Maintenance

    • Fertilizing: Feed sparingly using a balanced, low-nitrogen liquid cactus/succulent fertilizer diluted to half-strength, applied once a month during spring and summer. Do not fertilize in winter.
    • Grooming: As the plant forms a small shrub-like stem, lower leaves naturally dry up. Gently pluck away dried, dead leaves from the base to keep it tidy and improve airflow.
    • Leaf Care: The fine fuzzy hairs are delicate. Avoid touching the leaves too often to preserve their plush coating.

    ⚠️ Common Troubleshooting

    • Mushy, translucent, or yellowing leaves: Overwatering or soil staying wet too long. Withhold water, trim away rotted roots/stems, and repot in fresh dry soil.
    • Stretched, pale, or "leggy" growth: Not enough sunlight. Gradually transition to a sunnier location or supplement with a grow light.
    • Crispy, dropping, or puckered lower leaves: Under-watering or dehydration. Give a thorough, deep watering and check for root blockage.
