While grabbing a standard bag of potting soil is convenient, it is rarely the best choice for the long-term health of your succulents and cacti.
Unlike traditional houseplants, succulents require a loose, highly porous, and sharply draining medium rather than a moisture-retaining one.
The Best Sand Varieties for Succulent Mixes
To achieve the ideal structure, you need coarse sands that keep the root zone oxygenated.
Coarse Sand
Featuring large, angular grains, this sand promotes excellent soil aeration. It encourages a fine, branching root system and resists soil compaction over time.
River Sand
A naturally occurring blend of coarse sand and small, gritty stones. Highly effective for creating a drought-tolerant medium that mimics a plant's natural habitat.
Quartz Sand
A premium specialty sand composed primarily of quartz particles. Its extremely hard, gritty texture delivers superior drainage and will not degrade or break down.
⚠ A Note on What to Avoid
Always steer clear of play sand and beach sand. Play sand is too fine and packs together like cement when wet, suffocating roots. Beach sand contains high salt levels that can easily burn and kill your plants.
Formulating the Perfect Mix
As a general guideline, aim for a ratio of 50% to 85% coarse components to 15% to 50% standard potting soil.
